Where to See It

This is the most common forest at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (NHP), found on many upper slopes and ridge tops in the park. Good places to see the Dry Chestnut Oak - Northern Red Oak / Heath Forest include the following:

1) along the farthest, northwestern section of the Stone Fort Loop Trail (blue blaze) on Maryland Heights

2) on Loudon Heights along the Appalachian Trail (white blaze) more than a mile south of Chestnut Hill Road—just south of the junction with the orange-blaze Loudoun Heights Trail)
