• Late wildflowers: striped prince’s-pine, naked-flower tick-trefoil, whorled yellow loosestrife

Autumn Highlights

• Changing leaf colors of hickories, sassafras and American beech (yellow); oaks and red maple (variable); black gum (brilliant coppery-orange)
• Dark berries of mapleleaf viburnum

Winter Highlights

• Acorns—look for one-inch long acorns of chestnut oak, and smaller acorns of northern red oak and black oak
• Evergreen leaves of mountain laurel
• Tan, papery leaves of American beech, hanging on until spring
