Autumn Highlights

 

  • Blue berries of blue cohosh
  • Red berries of northern spicebush
  • Light green pawpaw fruits, which may have brown spots as they ripen, late summer through October
  • Changing leaf colors: yellow to deep purple leaves of white ash, yellow leaves of American basswood, orange-red leaves of sugar maple, bright yellow leaves of black maple, golden bronze of hickories 

Winter Highlights

  • Interesting shapes and textures of tree trunks and bark: multiple trunks of American basswood; warty bark of hackberry; and the neatly and tightly woven fishnet look of bitternut hickory bark.
