Ecological Threats

Each natural community faces ecological threats that could change its defining features, leading to its decline.

Non-Native Invasive Plants

Many kinds of non-native plants are introduced to these riverbanks by stormwaters that transport them from weed patches or plantings higher in the watershed. Most can’t survive the habitat here. But the following non-native invasive plants have been found in the Silver Maple Floodplain Forest in abundance:

  • beefsteak plant* (low plant)
  • garlic mustard* (low plant)
  • Japanese stiltgrass* (low plant)
  • jetbead* (shrub)
  • stinging nettle* (low plant)
