How to Recognize It

The Red-cedar Limestone Glade consists of grassy openings and patches of eastern red-cedar. It is found on dry rocky slopes underlain by limestone or dolomite bedrock. This natural community is very rare not just at Harpers Ferry, but throughout its range.

Identifying This Natural Community

  • A mosaic of grassy openings and dense pockets of eastern red-cedar
  • Scattered chinquapin oak
  • A mixture of the grasses sideoats grama and little bluestem
  • Location: on a sunny slope with limestone or dolomite outcrops and boulders
